‘Prince or Princess?’ Gender Selection Guide Reviewed

My husband, Allan and I have two girls, but our family was not yet complete. We wanted a baby boy. When we decided it was time to try and conceive, we wondered if it was possible to tip the odds of having a boy in our favor. So, I began searching the web for information on how to choose the gender of a baby.

We ran into sites that promoted medical procedures like IVF (In-Vitro Fertilization) and PGD (Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis). We did consider IVF and PGD but never really had the time and effort to look for a clinic that offers such procedures.

A big factor influencing our time/effort to look for a suitable clinic was the enormous cost of the procedures. I can tell you now that if you plan visit such clinics for gender selection, make sure your pockets are deep. IVF and PGD are going to cost you a bomb!

I kept the IVF and PGD option aside and continue searching online for other baby gender selection alternatives. That’s when I found out about the Chinese baby gender selection calendar, which isn’t accurate at all. Not that I’ve tried it but many people have been discussing the viability of it. It wasn’t logical and there wasn’t any scientific explanation to how it would work. In short, it just doesn’t make sense.

I kept searching and began reading about how gender is determined upon conception. Then it all began to start making sense. Here’s what I found out.

How is Gender Determined Upon Conception?

We all know that for human reproduction to occur, the sperm from the male needs to fertilize the egg of the female. But what most of us don’t know or have forgotten is that there are 2 types of sperm. There is the ‘Y chromosome bearing sperm’ and the ‘X chromosome bearing sperm’. Whichever ‘X’ or ‘Y’ bearing sperm reaches and fertilize the female egg first determines the gender of the baby.

• When the X chromosome bearing sperm reaches the female egg first, a baby girl will be conceived.
• When the Y chromosome bearing sperm reaches the female egg first, a baby boy will be conceived.

The next big question is how to determine or ensure which ‘X’ or ‘Y’ chromosome bearing sperm reaches the egg first? That’s where the characteristics of ‘X’ & ‘Y’ chromosome bearing sperm comes into the picture. Both of them have differentiated characteristics such as movement speed, strength, and longevity.

• X chromosome bearing sperm (female) are basically slow swimmers but tough and have a long lifespan. They can survive in acidic environment and last for days.
• Y chromosome bearing sperm (male) are quick swimmers but weak and can only survive for a short period of time. And they cannot survive in acidic environment.

To have a baby boy, we basically needed to create suitable environment for Y chromosome bearing sperm to survive and to also shorten the time and distance it needed to travel. Time and distance can easily be shortened by finding out the date of ovulation (period when we, ladies, are most fertile) and the sex position.

For a baby girl, you get the idea :)
