Maybe, but the desire to choose gender of their baby is still strong among today’s parents-to-be. They just don’t want to rely on the same primitive (an ineffective) methods.Today, there are cutting edge technologies available which can literally allow parents to choose the gender of their baby.Sadly, one of those methods is – selective abortion. Mother can find out the gender of her baby using amniocentesis, and then decide to have an abortion if the sex of the baby turns out not to be what she have hoped to be.This gender selection method is most prevalent in those countries where, historically and culturally, boys were preferred.Fortunately, there are other options for parents eager to choose gender of their baby. None of them free of ethical considerations, though!In mid 1970’s, geneticist Ronald Ericsson, PhD, developed the gender selection method that remains known as Ericsson method.This method sorts between male and female producing sperm and involves artificial insemination. Comparing to other gender selection methods, Ericsson method is not very expensive and invasive – however it possesses lower success rates.The cost is about 2 000 USD per circle. About three times out of ten, this gender selection method fails.Used since 1989, preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) method of gender selection involves in vitro fertilization (IVF).Doctors analyze the cells from embryos to determine its sex and consequently, only the embryo of desired gender is returned to woman’s uterus.The cost is nearly 20 000 USD, but it is 100 % accurate.PGD carries high chances of multiples.The newest and most talked about gender selection method is a variation on Ericsson’s method and is best known as Microsort.The statistics show that 86 % of parents who used this methods to conceive, did so for sex selection.The cost is about 15 000 USD, and success rate is about 90 % for conceiving girls, but only 74 % for conceiving boys.Microsort method is not yet approved by the Food and Drug Administration.Let just add that, while in United States gender selection is currently allowed for both genetic and preferential reasons, many other countries opted to regulate the whole matter much more restrictively.

For a Baby Boy,

Time intercourse as close to ovulation as possible: The idea is that since the Y-chromosome sperm are faster than the X-chromosome sperm, there will be more Y-chromosome sperm who reach the egg, making it more likely that a Y-chromosome carrying sperm will fertilize the egg.

Abstain from intercourse for four to five days prior to ovulation. Have intercourse only just at the time of ovulation and just before.

Have intercourse that allows for deep penetration. Doggy-Style is recommended. The idea is that the sperm will be deposited closer to the cervix where cervical fluid is most friendly to the Y-chromosome sperm and where the “boy sperm” are more likely to survive since there is less distance to travel.

Men avoid tight clothes: heat kills off both types of sperm, but will kill off the less protected, smaller Y-chromosome sperm faster, according to Shettles.

Women have an orgasm: Female orgasm increases the alkaline secretions in the vagina that are favorable to the Y-chromosome carrying sperm. Having an orgasm before or at the same time as the male partner is a must.

For a Baby Girl,

Have intercourse 2-3 days before ovulation and avoid intercourse just before ovulation until 2 days after ovulation and when you have peak cervical fluid: The idea is that when you have sex a few days before ovulation, only the X-chromosome “girl sperm” will be left in the female reproductive tract waiting to fertilize the egg when it is released.

Have intercourse with shallow penetration: Missionary or any position that will deposit the sperm slightly away from the cervix, giving advantage to the longer living, but slower X-chromosome-carrying sperm.

Women avoid orgasm: Women avoid orgasm because it makes the vaginal environment more alkaline, and less acidic and is disadvantageous to the X-chromosome “girl sperm”.

When you have an image in your mind, a little girl dressed in the palest pink, or a bouncing baby boy wearing that gorgeous sailor suit that you bought. Along with this thought is the vision of the dollar sign. After all, you can’t get baby gender selection for free.

Whichever process you have thought of pursuing, it is of course going to cost money. Your hard earned cash. And will it guarantee you that beautiful baby boy, or that pretty little girl. No – It won’t. Will it guarantee you a pregnancy? Sorry, but that’s a ‘No’ yet again. Most medical methods of baby sex selection rely on IVF to complete the process. IVF has only a 30-35% chance of ending in pregnancy.

The main problem is that only ‘one’ method of baby gender selection comes anywhere near to the 100% guarantee that you should rightfully expect. PGD – Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis is a process where the embryo is screened before being placed into your uterus. Normally this process is only allowed for medical reasons, but some clinics are carrying out this method as a way of gender selection. These clinics are making a fortune as PGD is the most expensive form of baby gender selection.

In some countries PGD is banned, but if it is available in your country, then how much are you willing to pay? OK, so you have an extremely good chance of getting the gender that you want. But what about actual pregnancy statistics of PGD? Yet again they’re not that good – because PGD relies on IVF for implanting an embryo into your uterus, so unfortunately you are back to that 30-35% chance of becoming a Mom!

Are there other ways of achieving baby gender selection?

In this day and age, there are alternative methods for just about every problem imaginable. Natural methods for curing a headache, natural ways to reduce labor pain when giving birth. So it’s not surprising that are natural ways to conceive a boy – or conceive a girl!

Natural gender selection methods include charting ovulation, altering your diet slightly, using the correct positions during intercourse, and actually preparing your body for pregnancy!

From the Shettles method, to the Jonas method there are lots of ways to conceive the baby with your choice of gender. What’s more they don’t cost a fortune, and the success rates are 80% plus. The extra good news is that you’re not going through invasive medical procedures and emptying your bank balance at the same time.

There can be a multitude of reasons why people look into gender selection. To complete their family, medical purposes, just because they want ‘a boy or a girl’ and so on. In some countries now though, ‘just because’ isn’t a good enough reason, and medical gender selection has been banned. So is there another way to select the gender of your next baby? Yes there is!

Although we live in a society where we have freedom of choice, there are of course limits and boundaries that our country’s governments and leading bodies have set out. In some countries where a certain sex has reached considerably more than the other, ruling parties have stepped in and banned medical gender selection.  Can you afford to travel to another country to receive this expensive and invasive treatment? Well not many of us could! IVF, PGD, Microsort, The Ericsson method all come at a price, and this is hardly surprising. But could you afford this treatment along with air fare, and hotel expenses? And then at the end of this very trying time, what happens if you don’t even conceive, let alone conceive that little girl or boy that you so desperately wanted. Could you afford to do it all again?

Are there other methods of preconception gender selection?

Natural gender selection is taking the world by storm, and it has an unbelievable success rate. With around 75%-95% of couples ‘really’ getting their dream baby!
